All our kraft pulp is elemental chlorine free. In addition, all
our mills have secondary effluent treatment systems and operate within
regulatory limits.
The following are examples of water usage initiatives implemented at specific mills in the last several years:
- In 2002, Thunder Bay began to reduce process water intake by 15%.
By December 2003, the facility had cut water usage by 18%, reducing
energy and greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.
- The Mersey mill cut fresh water consumption by 20%, from an
average of a little less than 8 million gallons per day down to an
average of about 6.3 million gallons per day.
- Since 2001, our Mokpo, South Korea mill has reduced its daily water intake by 15%.
- Grenada has a unique storm water system which collects all the
storm water from the mill site. This water is used as process
water for mill operations.
- Donnacona has reduced total suspended solids at the final
effluent by 94% and biological oxygen demand by 98% during the last
decade. Also, Donnacona’s #4 paper machine, which was built in
2000, reduced water consumption by 12%.
- The Catawba, South Carolina mill’s new kraft fiberline has
eliminated the use of elemental chlorine as a bleaching agent and
reduced adsorbable organic halides (AOX) in the final effluent by
73%. Effluent color levels have decreased 50%.
