Our History

Bowater has a unique history spanning more than a century of operations around the world. What first began as a family-owned paper merchant business in late 19th century England has evolved into an international public corporation that is among the largest paper manufacturers in North America.

W.V. Bowater establishes business as a paper merchant in London.
1923–1927



Transition of W.V. Bowater and Sons from paper merchant to paper manufacturer.
1938



First North American manufacturing operations began at Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
1952–1958



Construction and expansion of the Calhoun, Tennessee mill.
1956



Acquisition of Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
1957–1968



Construction and expansion of the Catawba, South Carolina mill.
1984



Bowater North America Corporation becomes Bowater Incorporated. North American headquarters established in Darien, Connecticut.
1984



Bowater Incorporated Initial Public Offering and listing on the NYSE.
1989



Startup of new thermo-mechanical pulp mill at Mersey.
1990



Startup of new kraft pulp mill at Calhoun.
1991



Acquisition of Great Northern Paper in Millinocket and East Millinocket, Maine.

Startup of recycled plant at Calhoun.
1992



Corporate headquarters move from Darien, Connecticut to Greenville, South Carolina.

Startup of new recovery boiler at Calhoun.

Arnold M. Nemirow appointed Chief Operating Officer.

Arnold M. Nemirow succeeds Anthony P. Gammie as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Acquisition of Avenor Inc., headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. The acquisition adds the Dalhousie, New Brunswick; Gatineau, Quebec; Maniwaki, Quebec; Thunder Bay, Ontario; and Usk, Washington mills to Bowater's operations.

Acquisition of a 100% recycle content mill in Mokpo, South Korea.

Acquisition of paper converting facility in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Great Northern Paper sold.

Acquisition of Newsprint South in Grenada, Mississippi.
2001



Acquisition of Alliance Forest Products, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, adding 10 Canadian sawmills, the Coosa Pines, Alabama, and the Donnacona and Dolbeau, Quebec paper mills to Bowater's operations.

Canadian operations and sawmills combined to form the Canadian Forest Products Division, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec.

Startup of the No. 2 converting line at Benton Harbor.

Startup of operations at the Convington, Tennessee converting facility.

Celebration of the 75th anniversary of operations at the Gatineau mill.

Newsprint machine conversion to lightweight coated paper at Catawba.

New fiber line built at Catawba.

Startup of the Ignace and Thunder Bay sawmills in Ontario, Canada.

Celebration of the 50th and 75th anniversaries of operations at the Calhoun and Mersey mills, respectively.

Announcement of a conversion of the No. 4 paper machine at Calhoun from newsprint to specialty papers.

Signing of Memorandum of Understanding between Bowater, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Dogwood Alliance regarding forestry operations on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau.

Celebration of the 75th anniversary of operations at the Dalhousie mill.

David J. Paterson succeeds Arnold M. Nemirow as President and Chief Executive Officer.

Announced intention to merge with Abitibi-Consolidated on January 29th.

Completed combination with Abitibi-Consolidated to become AbitibiBowater on October 29th.
