Research on forest ecology and sustainable forest management practices helps improve the growth and quality of desired species while sustaining ecosystems and fostering biological diversity. With the help of numerous research organizations, partners, and other interested parties, we are developing new ways to protecting and conserving the forest resource while enhancing recreational opportunities. Some examples of our research work are the following: We are conducting one of the most complete forestry-related studies in North America, The Legacy Forest. This 3.5 million acre forest creates a unique opportunity to study the effects of forest management on the environment. Our project partners: In addition, we co-sponsor a forest watershed research center in partnership with the University of New Brunswick and the provincial government. The center studies the effect of harvesting on the forest’s rivers and streams. Also, in partnership with universities in Quebec, we are doing research on the Northern Boreal Forest to better understand regeneration after fire, and adapt harvesting practices to favor diverse wildlife habitats. In the U.S., we support the National Council on Air & Stream Improvement (NCASI), which conducts research for forest health and productivity, water quality, wildlife and fish, landscape and ecosystem management, and biological diversity. |
