Environmental Management Systems Our environmental management systems (EMS) are the cornerstone of our
compliance effort. Formalized EMSs are in place at all operations
to guide all of our compliance activities. Each EMS addresses
permitting, training, testing and certification, and requires full
reporting of items of environmental impact. The requirements of
each EMS are integrated into the daily conduct of each mill and
woodlands operation.
Our goal is to have each mill operation's EMS either at or equivalent
to the ISO 14001 standard, although the final decision to achieve
certification resides with each operation. The table below
outlines the type of each mill operation's EMS:
| Mills | ISO Certified
| ISO Equivalent

The
EMSs at our Dalhousie, Mersey, Lac St-Jean, Lower St-Lawrence and
Thunder Bay woodlands operations are also registered to the ISO 14001
standard.
Environmental Audits The environmental management system at each mill or woodlands operation
requires third-party audits. Typically about one-third of our
operations is audited annually.
Audits are conducted by an independent auditing firm, which measures
our practices against established criteria to determine if we are
meeting our commitment to sustainable forest management and
environmental compliance.
For further information regarding our environmental audit please see page 13 of our Environmental Sustainability Report.
